The construction of Melgaço’s Castle dates back to the 12th century, by order of D. Afonso Henriques, to reinforce the authority of the newly created kingdom of Portugal, being classified as a National Monument. Of the old fortification, only the keep and part of the old fence of the medieval village remain.
The climb to the keep offers superb views of the neighboring mountains and the historic center of the village, with its narrow streets and stone houses. It is also in this tower that we can find the museological nucleus, where it is possible to discover the county’s heritage and the historical evolution of the territory, motivating the visitor to go out and discover.
This is the perfect place to start your discovery of Melgaço, where you can find more information about other monuments to visit, where to sleep, and where to eat.
