On top of a hill, at 1033 meters of altitude, stands the old Castro Laboreiro fortress, classified as a National Monument.. From the old medieval fortification, almost in ruins, it is possible to discover remains of the walls, the keep and an old cistern.
The history of the place dates back to the Iron Age, and the fortress was later built here, by the hand of D. Afonso Henriques, in the context of defending the kingdom’s borders. After being destroyed by a violent storm, Dom Diniz rebuilt it, proving its strategic and historical importance.
The path to the ruins takes about 20 minutes on foot and is somewhat bumpy, however, the beauty and grandeur of the landscape compensates for the walk to the top, allowing you to enjoy one of the most beautiful views that Melgaço has.
