Melgaço Composting Center

Melgaço now has a place for the treatment of green waste, located in the Industrial Zone of Penso. The Composting Center responded to several requests from residents. The composting process allows the transformation of green waste into a natural fertilizer (compost), to be applied later on in the municipality’s green spaces, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers. It is, therefore, a biological process of decomposition and recycling of organic matter.

With this project, an investment of €260,234.36 (FEEI contribution in the amount of €209,777.51), the objective is:

• reduce the amount of green waste going to landfill
• valuing green waste as a product to be incorporated into the fertility cycle of green spaces in the public domain;
• to be a potential alternative for the treatment/disposal of green waste, compared to the solution commonly used through the use of fire in burning leftovers.
