The Cava da Velha Bridge

National Monument
The Cava da Velha Bridge has been classified as a National Monument since 1986.

This Roman bridge that rises over the Laboreiro river, on the perimeter of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, near Castro Laboreiro, was originally built around the 1st century and later, in medieval times, was adjusted, being transformed into a bridge with easel board and two bows. From this medieval construction, one can still see the pavement composed of large slabs and stonework that connect, on both sides, to a Roman pavement.

In ancient times, the Ponte da Cava da Velha established the connection between the towns of Assureira, Varziela, Castro Laboreiro, and Porto de Cavaleiros. It served the mills that were built in its vicinity and that is now in disuse.
