Melgaço Main Church

The Melgaço Main Church was built in the 12th century, thus belonging to the Romanesque period, and is located in one of the main streets of the historic center.

Initially, it had the name: “Church of Santa Maria da Porta”, due to the fact that it was located next to one of the doors of the castle wall. Despite its construction dating from 1187, the configuration we see today is the result of the successive renovations that it underwent. It was seriously altered in the Baroque period, although two interesting Romanesque portals remain that are worth admiring.
