
Minho River fishermen are preserving ancestral knowledge through the Fishing Arts Workshop
The Pesqueiras Association, comprising fishermen from the Minho River, in collaboration with the Raízes de Melgaço project, is conducting a workshop focused on fishing gear with the goal of perpetuating the legacy associated with fishing practices. This initiative, consisting of five sessions, has been prompted by the fishermen’s concern to ensure the continued production of fishing nets used in the river’s fishing grounds, recently recognized on the National Inventory of Intangible Heritage.
Preserving traditional fishing knowledge in the Minho River fishing grounds is crucial for the long-term sustainability of this activity. It encompasses cognitive and cultural practices, as well as practical skills that have been passed down orally through generations.
