Preserving traditions: Melgaço organises workshop to create the Farrangalheiros ‘garruços’

Melgaço is preparing to organise a workshop to preserve and share the traditions of the “Entroido”, promoting the iconic “garruços”.

These characteristic elements of the “Farrangalheiros”, which once filled the streets of Castro Laboreiro with colour and joy during Carnival, will be the focus of a workshop promoted by the Municipality of Melgaço.

The event aims to teach the construction of the “garruços”, cardboard hats decorated with ribbons and vibrant ornaments that bring together a lace that covers the face of the “Farrangalheiros”, fundamental in the traditional costume of the region’s women.

The “garruço”, Entroido’s most representative object, complements the traditional Castro costume, made up of embroidered red skirts, yellow blouses and scarves. This workshop is an opportunity for those interested to learn the art of creating these emblematic adornments, thus ensuring the continuity of this festive tradition in Melgaço.
