Alumiada a São Tomé

Alumiada a São Tomé

The tradition of lighting São Tomé was lost in time and in the history of some of the most picturesque places in Penso

However, every 20th of December, when it gets dark, the people of this parish go out into the street, usually gathering in places, lighting the fachuqueiras (usually made of rye straw) and, with joy and devotion, they shout some of the phrases that are tradition since the memory of this celebration: “Long live Our Lord São Tomé Miraculous!”, to which the group will respond: “HAIL!”. Again: “Long live the new and long live the old!”, and the group: “HAIL!”.
A third sentence is spoken to those who are in the most remote places of the parish and also due to the rugged geography of this locality: “Long live the top and long live the bottom!”, to which the inhabitants will reply: “HAIL!”.

This is a unique tradition that has been maintained for generations!
